UFOs = sprites?

(photo by ILAN Science Team)

I was scrolling through MSNBC's science section and the first thing that caught my eye was their article on the topic of UFOs entitled "Can UFO sightings be explained by sprites?"

Researchers have detected the flashes between 35 and 80 miles (56-129 km) from the ground, far above the 7 to 10 miles (11-16 km) where usual lightning occurs. Sprites can take the form of fast-paced balls of electricity, although previous footage has suggested streaks or tendrils.

The cause or function of the flashes remains murky, but Price suggested that they could explain some of the UFO reports which have cropped up over the years. That might provide some solace for UFO enthusiasts disappointed by human-caused hoaxes in the past. {msnbc}

Solace? Oh really? Yes, this is better than a hoax but I don't think it will provide solace. Solace for me would be 10% solid evidence that UFOs (as in alien space crafts) are real. I am positive they are, but because I am not holding solid evidence in my hand, people only have my word. That's the most frustrating part. So no solace here!

What do I think about the sprite explanation? I think, sure, some sightings of UFOs very well may have been sprites! If someone showed me the photo to the left, the first thing that would pop into my mind is UFO. BUT, sprites don't abduct people, as far as I know.
