Who is "This Man" ?

I saw a snippet about this mysterious dream man known as "This Man" on the Coast home page and it caught my attention. http://thisman.org/
Here's the history on this man taken from the site above.

In January 2006 in New York, the patient of a well-known psychiatrist draws the face of a man that has been repeatedly appearing in her dreams. In more than one occasion that man has given her advice on her private life. The woman swears she has never met the man in her life.

That portrait lies forgotten on the psychiatrist's desk for a few days until one day another patient recognizes that face and says that the man has often visited him in his dreams. He also claims he has never seen that man in his waking life.

The psychiatrist decides to send the portrait to some of his colleagues that have patients with recurrent dreams. Within a few months, four patients recognize the man as a frequent presence in their own dreams. All the patients refer to him as THIS MAN.

From January 2006 until today, at least 2000 people have claimed they have seen this man in their dreams, in many cities all over the world: Los Angeles, Berlin, Sao Paulo, Tehran, Beijing, Rome, Barcelona, Stockholm, Paris, New Dehli, Moskow etc.

At the moment there is no ascertained relation or common trait among the people that have dreamed of seeing this man. Moreover, no living man has ever been recognized as resembling the man of the portrait by the people who have seen this man in their dreams.

The aim of this website is:
- to help those who have seen this man in their dreams and to foster communication among them;
- to understand who this man is and why he appears in an apparently pattern-less array of situations in the dreams of such diverse human subjects.

Notes: "well known psychiatrist"... well, we have no name. How do we know he even exists? Anyone could have made this website up. I could make one up right now and claim a well-known Swiss psychiatrist has discovered such and such and here are some testimonials, and insert italicized fictional accounts and give fake names and locations.
I feel like this might be yet another viral marketing campaign.Who do I think it may be? Well, check out the download page: http://thisman.org/download.htm   Looks like they're trying to get us to post this all over. If this is real I think doing this may actually muddy the waters... now more people may dream of "this man" because they're seeing posters of him all over the place.
I can't help but be cynical. How many times have we been hoaxed already? Sure, he looks very familiar but it's not like he looks especially unique or anything. I've seen people that look like this in real (waking) life.

I mean, I do want it to be real. I think it's neat if people really are seeing him in their dreams. I don't recall if I've ever seen him. I encounter many people I've never met in real life before in my dreams. I record most of my dreams so I will have to read through the archives and get back to you on that.

UPDATE

Side note: Here's the WhoIs records for the domain name. It's based in Rome, Italy: http://www.whois.net/whois/thisman.org
Look at the e-mail used to register this site. It's someone from this site:

guerrigliamarketing.it ...a GUERILLA MARKETING site. HMMM? Now I'm really skeptical.

What is guerilla marketing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guerrilla_marketing
Yeah, I'm a little pissed.

The site is registered to Andrea Natella. Here is a bio I found on him:
Andrea Natella was born and lives in Rome. He is the creative director of guerrigliamarketing.it, sociologist and journalist investigating youth culture and media communication, and a writer for TV programs about magic. Using a variety of pseudonyms, he has published essays on UFO"s, extreme sex and the art of sabotage. In 1995 he was known as Luther Blissett.

Founded in Italy in 2003 guerrigliamarketing.it, is an advertising agency that uses non-conventional communication techniques, like the creation of fictitious events or campaigns reaching the limits of legality, through which "fuck the market in order to enter it", entering the media system and taking away the automatism communication. Projects include a.o.: Rottama il Brand (Wreck the Brand), Shock and Hoax, Spazio Disponibile (Available Space), Espropriproletari (proletarian expropriation), and Where-Next.{source}

What do you think? Have you ever had a dream about this man?

  1. That's pretty cool. If it's some kind of scam or media experiment, it's pretty creative. The problem with the Internet is that everyone's skeptical about everything so they do the research. It's like the movie about the Fourth Kind and the supposed psychiatrist in Nome Alaska who hypnotized abductees. There's a fake site for the doctor. Another example is the movie "Paranormal Activity" which seemed like a great marketing tool to make people believe that only an exclusive few are seeing this amazing movie. When it showed it could sell out and do bigger theaters, people were already lined up to see what they weren't allowed to see earlier. I like the concept. If I believed it were true, I'd probably have to say we have a dream jumper out there with amazing astral projection skills. Cool post!

  2. Interesting! I wonder what Andrea's goal is? What is he trying to market? Is it just a psychological experiment? What data is he trying to collect? Hm..
